The Department of Physical Geography at Utrecht University has a distinct profile in research on land surface processes, natural hazards, large-scale hydrology, coast and river processes and morphology, spatio-dynamic modelling, earth observation and image processing. Our Coastal and River group focuses on the natural and human-induced dynamics of fluvial and coastal landscapes resulting from flow, sediment transport, biological interactions and human interference. We study barrier coasts, beaches and dunes, tidal inlet systems, rivers and floodplains, large estuaries with major ports, tidal flats, salt marshes and mangroves. In particular, we are excited about interactions between fluvial, marine and aeolian components in the widest sense and in feedbacks between physical and biotic processes in these landscapes. We combine numerical modelling, scale experiments, measurements in the field and also remote sensing. Our overarching aim is to contribute to the solution of major scientific and societal challenges, and to this end we aim to combine our knowledge in generic bio-morphological fluvial/coastal models.​

Salario: 

We offer a full-time Tenure Track position for a period of four years. We will agree upon a set of performance indicators to be met within the contract period. Subject to overall performance, we intend to convert your appointment to a permanent position. This may be either at the end of your contract or as soon as you qualify. Further career development to Associate Professor is possible.

The gross salary ranges between €3,637 and €4,978 per month (scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities). The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% per year.

Descripción del trabajo:

• Develop tools for spatio-temporal analysis of Earth observation data using coding and automated routines

• Develop and test novel methodologies for crop, soil and land Earth observation services.

• Map soil and crop biophysical parameters.

• Write reports and scientific publications.

Experiencia requerida:

• Experience with EO programming languages and tools (Python, GDAL, Orfeo, R, or Matlab)

• Experience with EO data analysis software (QGIS, SNAP, SAGA)

• Good knowledge of spatial databases (MySQL or PostgreSQL)

• Advanced proficient user of Greek and advanced user of English languages in a professional context (productive and comprehension skills)

• At least 2 years postgraduate professional experience in similar roles

• Experience in Earth Observation and spatial data analysis for land applications (e.g. land suitability analysis, land degradation, etc.).

MIning MUlti-source and MUlti-modal geo-referenced information (MIMU)

Applicants are invited for the position of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow as part of a joint research project between INESC-ID and NOVA.LINCS, related to the general field of Geospatial Artificial Intelligence.

The project, titled MIning MUlti-source and MUlti-modal geo-referenced information (MIMU), focuses on the study of machine learning approaches for the discovery and mapping of innovative geographic knowledge through the analysis and processing of large-scale volunteered data (e.g., geo-referenced multimedia contents such as images and textual descriptions, posted on social-media platforms like Flickr, Twitter, or Foursquare), in combination with more traditional sources (e.g., remote- sensing products available in the context of initiatives like ESA's Sentinel/Copernicus programme, and/or tables with socio-demographic data made available by statistical offices). Ongoing activities within the context of the project include the usage of deep learning methods for:

- Segmentation of high-resolution aerial imagery, e.g. in the context of mapping flooding extents  in urban regions.
- Proximate sensing and mapping with ground-level imagery;
- Remote sensing image captioning;
- Geographical text analysis.

Requirements:

A PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Geomatics, Electrical Engineering, Geographical Information Sciences, or other related fields. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in data science and machine learning, and with an established track record evidenced by publication in top quality journals and conferences.
